Skin & Earth is a story of a girl looking for hope in a hopeless world. Caught between romance and cults, gods and mortals, and just trying to find a good borscht, Enaia Jin is lead down a dark path by new lovers that reveal a twisted fantasy world and her own true nature. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where corporations rule, this adventurous tale of loneliness, deceit and self-discovery begins here!

A story of lust, loss, pain and recovery. The story is enjoyable, but has some flaws. It takes the first couple of issues to get going, and then the ending feels rushed and convoluted. There is a large amount of telling and not showing, which I am not a fan of. The characters are great though, and easy to relate to.

The artwork is hit or miss. The quality of the characters are not always fantastic, but the backgrounds are simply stunning. This is an excellent world of lore and mystery. The more you dig into it, the more fascinating it becomes.

Overall, an enjoyable comic, and when taken into consideration along with the companion album and extras (instagram etc) then this project becomes much greater than the sum of its parts.

Overall Thoughts
I first read these comics when they were being released and decided to do a reread of each issue in order to write this review. The collected Vol. 1 has since been released. This whole project is just fantastic and admirable. I had not heard of Lights before stumbling across these comics, but I believe she is a well known pop star. question mark. Old Man Stark don’t know about these things. After doing a tad bit of research I discovered that this project was much larger than just the comics. There is an album that goes along with it. Each track on the album links in with a chapter in the comics.

But wait, there’s more! There is also an Instagram account connecting the comics and album with hidden extras and the such. So it’s easy to get lost for hours in this world. Honestly, this project is enormous, and there must have been so much time and effort gone into planning it all. In some videos on the youtube dot com that I watched with my eyes, I learned that Lights is 100% self-taught in creating comics and was learning as she was going along. Primarily by watching Youtube videos. What a time to be alive, kids!

En, our protag, is relatable and easy to get invested in. She has a number of flaws. She’s desperate to be needed and loved, which leaves her vulnerable to being manipulated and used. The supporting cast are also well developed and fit the story well.

With the first couple of issues I thought this might be a simple story of lust and heartbreak, but it develops into something much more fantastical and engaging by the end. The plot feels a little lost to start with and it’s rather slow for the first couple of issues, but things really start to pick up in issue three and everything comes together nicely in the end.

Although the story is really good, the execution lacks a certain quality. After 5 issues of building to the crescendo, we get many pages of back story and the antagonist just telling us their evil plan. The ending is convoluted and rushed. This tarnished my enjoyment of the ending a little. I would have much preferred an ending that followed the golden rule of show, don’t tell, but unfortunately that is not what we have here. The story would have benefited from having maybe another chapter or two to allow the ending to be set up and embedded a little more.

The artwork is a little hit and miss for me. Some of the characters look poor in certain panels. The line work is a little sloppy. I think it’s fair to say that Lights is still mastering her craft. But the backgrounds are stunningly beautiful. Lights comments on how she tried to make even the ugly parts of the city have a sense of beauty to them, and they really do. They are mildly psychedelic.

There is some really good GSD rep here. En has a sexual relationship with a guy, and then with a woman. There is no big deal made of this. It simply happens and the story continues. This is how non-heterosexual relationships should be done.

Overall, this has a number of flaws, but it’s still a fantastic project and an enjoyable comic. The story is engaging and has plenty of twists and turns. The lore of the world is epic in all aspects. Even though on it’s own, the comic is good not great, when considering the project as a whole, the comic, the album, and the extras, it becomes something much greater than the sum of its parts. Definitely one to check out.

Anyway, I’m off to make some knee hats. Until next time, Peace and Love!

  1. I actually listened to some of the music due to your recommendation- and I liked it! and also developed a girl crush but whatever!

I never knew this was such a big project though and that she is self taught… how very interesting and cool! I always thought that if you want to do something you definitely have the guidance to learn how to do things if you look for them.. and especially with all these online resources… jaysus… I could become a… a… brick layer!
I must check out more of this music and even comics…

PS! I would murder for some good borscht right now.. with a good dollop of sour cream.. *drooling right here, man*
